New Jersey Devils Legend Martin Brodeur – Slap Shot Signatures Player Profile

Martin Brodeur was born May 6, 1972 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and is former goaltender and the Assistant General Manager of the St. Louis Blues.  He played 21 seasons with the New Jersey Devils during which he won  three Stanley Cup championships and five Eastern Conference titles.  He also won two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games, as well as several other medals with Team Canada.

Brodeur is regarded as one of the greatest goaltenders of all time.

On June 7, 2014 he became a free agent for the 2014 – 2015 season ending his 21 years with the New Jersey Devils.  On November 26, 2014, he signed a try-out contract with the St. Louis Blues and shortly after, a 1 year contact with them.

Brodeur holds numerous NHL and franchise records including all-time regular season wins (691), losses (397), shutouts (125) and games played (1,266) and is the only goalie in NHL history with eight 40-win seasons.  He is also a 10-time NHL All-Star and one of only two goalies to score a goal in both regular season and play-offs.

Brodeur was known for his puck handling, positional play, and reflexes especially with his glove hand.  His skill at puck handling was so well known, it led in part to the NHL changing the rules regarding where goalies were allowed to handle the puck outside of the goal crease.  It is known as the “Brodeur Rule”.

An announcement of his retirement was made in the middle of the 2014 – 2015 season after starting just six games with the Blues.  After this announcement, Brodeur was hired by the Blues as Assistant General Manager for their team.

On February 8, 2016 the New Jersey Devils unveiled a bronze statue of Brodeur which will be displayed outside the Prudential Center (which is located in Newark, New Jersey).  On February 9, 2016, jersey #30 was retired by the Devils.
